What a retaining wall is doing
A retaining wall holds back a mass of soil that wants to move downhill. That soil gets dramatically heavier when it's saturated, and in New Jersey it freezes and expands against the back of the wall every winter. The forces are much larger than the wall looks.
This is why leaning, bulging and failed walls are so common in back yards. Almost none of them failed because the blocks were bad. They failed because of what wasn't done behind them.
The parts you never see
- The base. A compacted stone footing, level and wide enough to spread the load, with the first course set into the ground. If the bottom course isn't buried and dead level, everything above it is already wrong.
- Drainage stone. Clean stone behind the wall so water can move down and out instead of building pressure against the back face. Saturated soil against an undrained wall is what pushes walls over.
- The drain. A perforated pipe at the base of the drainage zone with somewhere to actually daylight. A drain that outlets nowhere is decoration.
- Backfill and compaction. Filled and compacted in lifts as the wall goes up, not shoved in at the end.
- Reinforcement. Above certain heights, or with a slope or a driveway above the wall, geogrid tied back into the retained soil is what stops the wall being pushed forward as a unit.
None of that is visible in a finished photo. It is most of the cost and all of the lifespan.
Height, and when you need a permit
Most New Jersey towns require a permit for retaining walls above a certain height, and many require engineered drawings above a taller threshold. Walls near a property line, near a structure, or that change how water leaves the lot often trigger review regardless of height.
Two shorter terraced walls are frequently a better answer than one tall one — structurally simpler, often cheaper, and you get planting space between them. We'll tell you what your specific job needs before it starts.
Seating walls
Not every wall retains. A freestanding seating wall around a patio does something different: it makes an open slab feel like a room and gives you permanent seating that doesn't blow over or need storing for winter.
The details that matter are height and cap. Sit-down height is a fairly narrow window, and the cap needs enough overhang and a smooth enough edge to actually be comfortable to sit on. A wall built to the wrong height is a wall nobody sits on.
The patio on our work page shows a sunken patio ringed with a seating wall — the wall is retaining the grade change on three sides and giving seating on all of them.
Matching the rest of the yard
Wall block comes in a wide range of faces, colours and cap profiles, and the choice should be made against whatever the patio surface is going to be, not in isolation. The most common regret is a wall picked from a sample board in a yard and a patio picked six weeks later that fights with it. If both are in the same job, we lay the choices out together.
Fixing an existing wall
If a wall is leaning, bulging in the middle, or the caps are separating, it is telling you that water is building up behind it or the base has moved. Re-stacking the top courses does nothing. It usually needs taking down and rebuilding with proper drainage, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you a repair that fails again next spring.
